Belgian ale at its darkest and strongest: 8 to 12% ABV, deep amber to coppery brown, rich in malt with dark fruit and spice. Westvleteren made its version just before the Second World War and Chimay and Rochefort followed just after. Chimay Blue, Rochefort 10 and St. Bernardus Abt 12 are the reference points.
The median is 9.0% ABV. Half of them fall between 8.0% and 10.5%.
