Black lager from Thuringia, brewed since 1543. Dark as a stout and as light on the tongue as a pilsner.
Originally limited beer to water, barley and hops. Yeast was not yet understood. Not a modern legal requirement for most beer sold in Germany, but still claimed as a mark of tradition.
